Kyogen is performed on a stage made of cyprus wood. It has pillars at the corners that support a roof. The stage has a roof because it was originally performed outdoors, where the roof was needed to protect actors from possible weather. Now, most plays are performed indoors, but they still have the roof to show the tradition of classic Kyogen. There are no stage sets, and no decortions. Nothing is allowed to separate the audience from the stage, so there is no curtain or anything in front of the main stage. The only background is a tree, which symbolizes that the play is set in the world of spirits The Kabuki stage was an amazing aspect towards the performance. it can appear off the ground to look as if it were flying. It had many trapdoors which made it so the actors could enter and leave without it being obvious. there is also a walkway, called a himichi, out in the middle of the theater that can be used for exits and entrances as well. There elaborate props make the theater lively and fun as well as there close rapport between the audience. |
